Developing an individual learning plan
This video demonstrates where digital has the most impact on planning of the Apprenticeship Programme.
The Individual Learning Plan (or ILP) is a personalised plan of where an apprentice is headed and how they are going to get there during their apprenticeship.
The Future Apprenticeships toolkit, from the Education and Training Foundation, defines the task of building an individual learning plan in the Overview of Section 4. In the Actions for Section 13, it suggests:
“tailoring individual apprentice training plans to include financial, milestone and progress/achievement checkpoints”.
The Jisc Apprenticeship Journey sums up the task neatly:
- ILPs contain all the important details about delivery and assessment
- They ensure each individual has a clearly mapped route to meeting the standard
- ILPs provide an at-a-glance summary of experience and achievements
- They facilitate the measuring and monitoring of progress
- A good ILP goes beyond basic legal requirements and can be used to stretch, challenge and support apprentices.
Jisc also explain why an e-ILP (an electronic, rather than paper version) has many benefits:

Benefits as bullet pointed in the Jisc Toolkit.
Most education and training providers will already have a Virtual Learning Environment (or VLE), which should provide the means to support an e-ILP. If you do not have a VLE, then there are many such systems available in addition to those you have seen in the videos.
Have a go:
This exercise will help you get started making use of digital tools to support each apprentice’s ILP.
If your organisation already has a VLE, then find out who can help you with exploiting its features to support the development of ILPs.
If not, use the links in the See Also section as you follow these useful steps:
- Read through the advice on the Jisc Apprenticeship Toolkit, especially in the sections on ‘Why use an electronic individual learning plan (e-ILP)?’ and ‘Making the most of your individual learning plan (ILP) data’.
- Explore the OneFile website (one of the e-ILP systems you explored) and Ecordia (from the Jisc case study).
- Search online for any other possible VLEs or e-ILPs you could use.
- Note in your course journal any tools you find that look useful, for future reference.
Have your say:
- Describe how you might use digital to enrich what is traditionally done with paper.
- What extra value does digital bring?
Share and discuss your thoughts with other learners in the Comments.
