Readiness for the EPA

In this video, you will see how useful digital can be in the lead-up to an apprentice going to the end-point assessment (EPA).

The EPA, and its administration by an independent organisation, is new to the apprenticeship process. You may not have reached this stage with your apprentices yet.

The EPA is the final assessment an apprentice must complete at the end of their training. It is intended to show job-readiness; that the apprentice can meet the standard for their role in terms of knowledge, skills and behaviour.

Before an apprentice takes the EPA there is a judgment of whether they are ready. There are two aspects to this:

  1. Has the apprentice achieved the qualifications that are needed for the particular standard, including the maths and English that are required?
  2. Has the apprentice gained the competencies required for the particular standard? This can include the completion of a portfolio, or a self-assessment exercise.

The decision about whether an apprentice is ready for their EPA is made by both the employer and the training provider. In the video, Ben Gallant from Great Ormond Street Hospital explains how having portfolios in a digital format helps in making that joint decision.

Why use digital in preparing for the EPA?

Using digital technology throughout the apprenticeship journey makes everyone’s job a lot easier when it comes to deciding whether the apprentice is ready for their EPA. Some of these benefits include:

  • Regular three-way contact during the apprenticeship can help to build relationships between the employer and the apprenticeship provider, and both have a good knowledge of the apprentice.
  • The employer and the training provider have access to the same view of the apprentice and their progress.
  • All relevant evidence is in the same place, including the portfolio, any relevant qualifications, records of off-the-job training and the results of on-programme assessment.
  • Reflective work carried out by the apprentice can be used in making that decision.
  • Any mock EPA activities can also be considered.
