Formative assessment

Formative assessment

In this step, you will consider if formative assessment can help you to assess whether an apprentice is ready for the EPA.

The apprentice journey involves both formative and summative assessment. The main summative assessment is the EPA, but a key aspect of the apprenticeship journey is ’on-programme assessment’. That is, formative assessment which takes place during the apprenticeship.

Formative assessment

The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning so that you can provide ongoing feedback. This feedback can also be used by instructors to improve their teaching. More specifically, formative assessments:

  • help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work
  • help tutors and managers recognise where students are struggling and allows them to address problems immediately.

Formative assessment can play a very important role as the apprentice progresses through their training. It can help both the employer and the training provider monitor where the apprentice is on that journey to gain the required knowledge, skills and behaviours and to assess whether they are ready for the EPA.

Further your understanding:

Dylan Wiliam (an Educationalist) has written extensively about formative assessment and assessment for learning. His website contains many resources, some of which you might find useful. Follow the link in the See Also section to read some of his work and find out more.

Have your say:

  • How can formative assessment in your context help you to know when the apprentice is ready?
  • How can it help prepare your learners/apprentices for EPA?

Share and discuss your thoughts with other learners in the Comments.
