The ‘learning person’ – workplace skills for the future

This exercise will help you understand the generic concept of a learning person in a digital age – someone who can be independent and take advantage of digital opportunities to learn and improve their work.

The concept of ‘the learning individual’ is vital in any organisation, as its environment can change quickly and everyone has to be prepared to learn and adapt. This is why it is so important to encourage apprentices to become independent learners – able to keep up to date, to learn and improve continually at work.

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours are assessed in the new Apprenticeship Standard to support this aim. For example, ‘Celebrate personal growth and achievement of team members’ is a behaviour that could fit with practically any type of workplace. Although, it happens to be in the Standard for a Senior Chef.

Knowledge: The information and technical ‘know-how’ needed.

Skills: The practical application of knowledge or general ability to work effectively.

Behaviours: Approaches or mind-sets needed for competence, including elements of professionalism.

As many Apprenticeship Standards are quite generic descriptions of the outcomes required, it should be possible for providers to share their digital teaching ideas across fairly different industry sectors. This means we can share the burden of innovation, which is important for busy trainers’ and teachers’ productivity.

This exercise is designed to let you practice identifying the differences between the standards for Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours. It’s not a marked test, but it is not always as easy as you might expect!

All the quotes in the exercise come from three different Apprenticeship Standards (you can view these PDFs in the Downloads section). Most of them could be appropriate for your own apprentices as the descriptions are quite generic. They also give you an idea of the similarities and differences across the industry sectors.

Further your understanding:

Go to the Downloads section where you will find a downloadable list of Apprenticeship Standards at different levels, with hyperlinks for nearly 200 standards, across many different industry sectors.

Have your say:

In the Comments, describe a tool or method you would use to develop the behaviour mentioned earlier: to ‘celebrate personal growth and achievement of team members’.

Browse through the ideas from other learners. You may want to copy-and-paste inspiring ideas into your course journal.

A more accessible version of the exercise below is also available (you can also access a PDF of the exercise and feedback in the Downloads). You may want to open the link in a new browser tab or window so that you can easily return to this page.
