The distance travelled
In this video, you will hear how some training providers are using digital to help them track the progress of their apprentices.
As you saw last week, apprentices are provided with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which should contain a clearly mapped route to meeting their subject standard.
As apprentices move through their off-the-job training and their workplace experience, the training provider, employer and the apprentice need to know how they are progressing:
- Are they spending the required 20% of their time on off-the-job training?
- Are they meeting the criteria for the standard?
- Are they passing the on-programme assessments?
- Are they keeping up with their ILP?
How can digital tools help?
Training providers can now track the apprentice’s achievements with digital tools, such as dashboards or other tracking systems. They enable everyone to clearly see:
- what the apprentice has completed
- if they are still on track to meet the standards
- what the apprentice still needs to do.
The Future Apprenticeships Toolkit makes specific recommendations about tracking progress, in section 11 ‘Delivering and preparing for end-point assessment’. These suggestions include setting progress and achievement targets and quality assurance milestones. These milestones may include:
- end of section checkpoints
- completion of the skills elements
- portfolio review
- achievement of mandated training
- certification (such as a Health and Safety training certificate).
WhiteHat carries out progress reviews with their apprentices every two months. These reviews are supported by using Digital Forms, where the employer, the apprentice and the coach input the progress targets for the next two months. This is then uploaded for all to access and is used for review purposes at monthly visits.
